If the interviewer asks if you have any questions for him/her, make sure you ask for a business card. This will be crucial to the ensuing steps. 2. Send a follow up thank you email after interview When you get home from the interview, shoot off a follow-up email to the interviewer, thanking him or her for his time and expressing your interest in the job, again. This will show the interviewer that youâre serious about working with the company and will probably separate you from half the field of candidates who did not take time to take this action. 3. Then send a thank you letter You should also utilize snail mail to show the interviewer how serious you are. While emails and phone calls can come across as somewhat cold forms of communication, handwritten notes are warm. In your note, thank them for their time and address a few of the things you discussed in the interview. For instance, if the interviewer mentioned that the company is looking for goal-oriented people to take on a new project, mention how you have exercised and demonstrated your ability to achieve goals. Tailor the letter to the company youâre sending it to. 4. Call for a status check One week after the interview, call the interviewerâs office and ask about the status of the job search. If you canât speak with the interviewer, leave a message on their phone. One week after that, send another follow up email to the interviewer basically asking the same thing. 5. Don't overdo it It is possible to come off as overly pushy. The fact is that the HR rep you talked to might be very busy with a lot of new hires. Do not cold call or email more than once in a week. Give them time to respond and when youâre on the phone with them, be courteous and do not simply ask, âDid I get the job?â The follow-up (call or email) is a great tool in the interviewing process. It can separate the winners from the losers in the hunt for employment, but it will only help if you do your initial homework on the company and properly prepare for the first interview. It is about that time when people get to drink green beer, wear very long leprechaun hats, and even pinch each other for not adorning that obviously shamrock green make up. It is that time when you can get crazy but then again, it feels even better if you can have other crazy people to do it with you. Luckily, there are cities that take St. Patrickâs Day pretty seriously and the organizers go all out to give those attending the time of their lives. If youâre looking for such cities, here are five that will definitely not disappoint. Boston, Massachusetts Boston is the home of the leprechaun. Even the greatest basketball team has a logo that is all about St Patrickâs. It has a leprechaun with a hat and that shamrock green. The city has the biggest event anyone can think of especially in South Boston. It is where the first parade for St Patrick was recorded in 1737 and each has been bigger than the previous. The city records more than 850,000 and features activities like marching bands with floats and even bag pipers. Where there are that many people, youâre guaranteed to find a significant amount of craziness. Chicago, Illinois If there is craziness and a wild throw down on St Paddyâs day, no city does it better than Chicago. Even the Chicago River that is usually dyed green for the occasion is testament to how interesting thing get. Usually, the parade will start at the Columbus and Balbo Drives corner at noon but being there earlier gives you more time to witness the mayhem and even be part of it as it goes down. It hosts the largest parade that is more than 2 million people strong and all the attendees can pop into the numerous Irish pubs and drown themselves in beer. The mayhem and craziness starts right after. Savannah, Georgia Not only is Savannah historic for its must see spots in the East coast, but it is also a surprise pick to be on the list. If you were not aware, the city hosts about 400,000 and numerous events and green dyed fountains for the holiday and without a doubt, it does provide for a great time for every one that can make it down there. Worry not, the events do include that green beer as well. The great weather all year round is also a great addition since you can get as wet as you would like without the weather taking a spin off on you. These five cities are known for wild and crazy St Patricks Day celebrations. 6 surprising findings about employeesâ feelings toward performance reviews You often hear people say that the annual performance review process is one of the most awful, detestable parts of work. Two common complaints are that reviews are a waste of time and that they are too stressful. Managers hate spending all the time compiling the reviews. For example, last year Deloitte calculated that its managers spent a combined 2 million hours each year just putting together performance reviews. Employees hate being judged strictly objectively during a review, particularly if their manager is only focusing on their most recent accomplishment (or failure) rather than on a big project they completed eight months ago. But when you think about those complaints, you realize that they are a little imprecise. After all, there are certainly people out there who enjoy performance reviews and there are certainly companies whose review methods are innovative and enriching. A new poll from TINYpulse, a startup specializing in employee engagement issues, sought to find out exactly who hates performance reviews the most. Their findings are surprising, revealing that older workers are more likely to go along with the traditional review process while the youngest workers fear and loathe them the most. The poll is a must-read for any manager with a gaggle of young millennial employees. TINYpulse polled more than 1,000 professionals in late February, and here are six surprising facts they found about employeesâ feelings toward performance reviews: 1. Many feel reviews are outdated Thirty-seven percent of poll respondents agreed that reviews are outdated, referring to processes that involve spreadsheets or even handwritten notes. In 2015, millennials became the largest demographic group in the workforce. This is a generation raised with iPhones and Twitter. So itâs no wonder that they might balk at filling out a review on paper. Millennials are probably wondering, âIs there an app for that?â 2. Millennials fear reviews Of the three major generations that TINYpulse polled â" baby boomers, Gen X, and millennials â" millennials were most fearful of reviews. A little more than 24 percent of millennials said that they feared the review process, compared to 16 percent of Gen X and 14 percent of baby boomers. Millennials also rated their stress about reviews more highly than the other two generations. 3. Women fear reviews more TINYpulse also found that women fear performance reviews more than do men. Twenty-one percent of women said they are afraid of the review process, while just 14 percent of men were afraid of a review. But women were braver in one area â" 40 percent said they want their direct manager to conduct their review, while only 29 percent of men did. (However, 19 percent of men wanted executive-level leaders involved present during the review, compared to 13 percent of women.) 4. Annual reviews still popular A majority of respondents â" just under 50 percent â" said that they prefer a review once a year. Quarterly reviews were a second preference at 23 percent. But this trend isnât firm. Last year the consulting giant Accenture (with 330,000 employees) announced it would do away with annual performance reviews in favor of a system where employees receive feedback on a more flexible basis. 5. Millennials want reviews more often Hopefully youâre not sick of hearing about millennials â" especially because their influence over reviews really will be huge. Only 38 percent of millennials prefer an annual review, compared to 44 percent of Gen X and an astounding 58 percent of baby boomers. Millennials are more diverse in their preferences, with 28 percent preferring a quarterly review and 22 percent desiring a bi-annual review. And nine percent were willing to undergo a monthly review, compared to just four percent of baby boomers. 6. Compensation lacking Last, but not least, is the issue of compensation. A stunning 41 percent of respondents said that their performance review did not result in a pay increase. Not surprisingly, 64 percent said that they wanted their performance review tied to compensation. The takeaway from the TINYpulse poll seems to be that reviews are probably here to stay, but they will go through some drastic changes under the influence of millennials. There are already mobile apps emerging to organize the review process by allowing managers and employees to rate performance whenever they feel like it. So if youâre used to a once-a-year review in a document or spreadsheet, get ready for some changes.
