Why You Must Give to Get - Your Career Intel
Why You Must Give to Get - Your Career Intelbehauptung days, everyone is busy. With so many demands on our time, its easy to fall into the mindset of Time is money, Dont work for free, or Whats in it for me? But over the 18 years Ive worked as a recruiter in the Denver area, Ive learned that it benefits you immensely to view every interaction as an opportunity to build a long-term relationship, ratherbei than a transaction requiring compensation.Ive been a recruiter in the Denver area since 1999. At this stage in my career, fruchtwein of my business comes from referrals. Those referrals come from years of relationship building. And yes, at times this relationship building has meant doing favors for free But I can tell you that even if there is no immediate return, every favor you do pays you back in the long run.Do you bring value to every interaction? Heres how I strive to put value firstShare information freely. One of the benefits of working for a large, nationwide company is that we place a huge number of candidates and we have very current, comprehensive data on the industries in which we operate. Ive had companies come to me who havent hired in a while and are struggling to set compensation for new roles they need to fill. Sometimes these companies become clients and other times they do not end up using a recruiter to stab und sttze their search. No matter the outcome, I will do whatever I can to give them the information they need, free of charge. Even if they cant hire me now, they might take us on for another search down the line. Here in Denver, the current business climate is so favorable that we are seeing many companies moving into the area. They often dont know the labor market well, and need all the advice they can get. While some companies might only share this kind of data for a fee, we are happy to help them out wherever we can.Do whats right for the person, not whats right for the sale.In addition to advising companies, giving candidates advice is a major part of my job. A job change is a critical crossroads in a persons life. I want to make sure that the advice I give is unbiased and that I have their best interests at heart. Although it might be tempting to place a candidate in a role that isnt the best fit in order to close the deal, I look at each candidate as a potential life-long relationship. A candidate who is placed into a job he loves and thrives in can become a hiring manager and client down the line. A candidate who hates her placement probably wont work with me again or refer other professionals my way, either.Build your favor bank.Even internally at the office, I try to help my colleagues wherever I can. Theres one woman Ive worked with since I joined the firm. When she goes on vacation, I cover her work, and when I go on vacation, she covers mine. We have a long history of looking out for each other, and we each know the other has our back.I call this building the favor bank. In order to withdraw favors fro m the bank, you have to put favors in. Even small favors help to build your balance sheet. I found out that one candidate I had placed years ago was about to have her first child, and so I offered her maternity clothes that I no longer needed. Everyone benefittedWith so many people relocating to Denver to take advantage of the thriving labor market, we work with a lot of newcomers to the area. Even if we dont end up placing them with our clients, I still give them advice to help them with their move what different neighborhoods are like, upcoming events that might interest them, and how to navigate the school system. There may not be any monetary return but its a favor in the bank.Get into the mindset of cultivating empathy and always considering other peoples needs. Youll find it easy to identify ways you can add value to every interaction. When your colleagues and friends think of you as a person who has improved their lives, then youll really departure to see returns.

The 6 Rules I Swear By To Help Me Maintain Harmony as a Working Mom
The 6 Rules I Swear By To Help Me Maintain Harmony as a Working Mom Shani Sankersingh has a lot on her plate. As Senior Product Manager of Onboarding at Capital One, she has a demanding job, shes a devoted mother of two, and - on top of that - she regularly schedules time to decompress with her friends and neighbors. Yet while her day starts early and is jam packed, Shani makes it all work.Being employed by Capital One certainly helps. They really empathize with working parents, she says, adding that she takes advantage of flexible scheduling and remote work options. Most teams I work with acknowledge that sometimes life happens, and they are always supportive and flexible, she explains. How long have you been in yur current role, and what were you doing previously? I have been in my current role for almost 5 years and have been working at Capital One for over 9 years. At my prior job, I led a team of system engineers and integrators for Royal Bank Canada in the Caribbean. Ive always been a technical lead, but in 2014 I discovered a passion for product development and I switched over to the Product Management discipline.Whats your pre-work morning routine like?Im usually up by 6 a.m. to organize breakfast and lunch for my family. Both my boys (9 and 15) take lunches to school, so I make fresh lunches for them daily. I have my breakfast (bulletproof coffee) by 710 a.m., typically after my younger son gets on his school bus.Why do you think Capital One is a particularly great place to be a working mom?I believe Capital One is a great place to work because they recognize and empathize with working parents. My husband travels for his job at least two weeks each month, so this leaves me to parent alone in his absence. My leadership team at Capital One supports working from home as needed and provides me with excellent collaboration tools so I never miss a beat. When unplanned kid emergencies have sprung up, my managers have always been super flexible and understandin g. Most teams I work with acknowledge that sometimes life happens, and they are always supportive and flexible. How do you feel like your job has helped complement your function as a parent?I am very proud of the work I do at Capital One, and my kids know the importance of a good work ethic and accountability. They see my commitment to living our values and they likewise have adopted similar ethics as part of their approach to school/sports.Most importantly, I always try to apply the productivity techniques that I use as part of my daily routine at work to my home life my kids all love post-its and sharpies. We have a roadmap of our vacations over the next two years, which our family put together, and we use design thinking for problem solving and prioritization. How has your role as a mom made you a better employee? As a parent, Ive learned to be patient and to appreciate different perspectives. My kids are different ages, and as such, have varying perspectives. Theyve taught me to li sten and to value diverse thought.Whats your go-to stress-relief activity or routine? My go-to stress buster is cooking/baking and regular wine nights. Once a month, my ladies group (neighbors) will meet up at different houses and enjoy snacks and drinks. We share stories, advice and anecdotes about life, books, movies - everything. My ladies group is the most amazing support system for moms like myself. What kinds of boundaries do you follow (if any) to separate work and family time?I have a few rules on keeping harmony in my lifeLeave your drama at the door (that applies to everyone). We do pits and peaks at most dinners thats the time we can share the daily grind.I practice an open-door policy both at home and at the office.Sometimes people just have a bad day. Dont judge someone in the pit.Set expectations. If I have to work late, I let everyone at home know so I can get coverage. It is important to have updated communication to set expectations.Everyone is entitled to a time out, so if you need it, just say so. Ask for your space. What are you especially good at as a mom? What about at work?As a mom, I am really good at listening and bedrngnis freaking out. I believe all problems have solutions we just have to figure them out. I have two pictures hung in the corridor of the bedrooms one says Failure=Opportunity and the other says Hearing=Listening. If I am swamped and the kids speak to me, I will share at times that I am hearing but I am not listening, and they know to check in with me a little later. I have the exact same approach at work.Whats your No. 1 tip for new moms who are navigating the delicate balance of working and mothering?Be kind to yourself. Mistakes happen and its not the end of the world.Leave room for flexibility because life happens.Whats your favorite part of your work day (or your favorite aspect of your job)?My favorite part of the day is to review the list of things that I have completed. I strike through completed items on my list an d it feels awesome. What do you love most about Capital One?I get the opportunity every day to learn something new about life. At Capital One there are many avenues to try new skills or learn new things. The biggest appeal of Capital One is the investment in their associates - there are so many programs that are appealing across the board for associate growth.--Fairygodboss is proud to mann an ihrer seite with Capital One.Find a job there today

Why you need to write an intimidation list and how it helps you
Why you need to write an intimidation list and how it helps youWhy you need to write an intimidation list and how it helps youActually giving my all to something. Sandwiches stacked so thick with veggies I dont know how to take a bite. Being vulnerable. Money talk. People who can strut better in stilettos than I can in sneakers. These are a few of the items on my intimidation list. Others include calling the doctors office to schedule an appointment and telling any service person that they made my bestellung incorrectly. When welches the last time you sat down and asked yourself, What intimidates me? Beyond that, when was the last time you sat down to do some self-reflection? Ew, I know. I know. But hear me out. Its super important to reflect on yourself, your ambitions, your fears, your experiences- all of it. If you dont understand why you are where you are, who you are- how are you supposed to get where youre trying to go? Have you ever been stressed, and you cant really pinpoint why - until you pay your phone bill and simultaneously release your clenched jaw- realizing that was it the whole time?In making time for our work, our friends, our pets, our families, our side hustles- we forget to make time for us. Weve taught ourselves that its more important- a quick fix- to absprache with the what (take ibuprofen because my jaw hurts), without giving any thought at all to the why (why am I clenching my jaw?). Fixing the symptoms in the short run works. Its easier. But in the long-run, youre doing yourself a great disservice.Thats where the intimidation list comes in. Were all intimidated by something. We were inspired byan article on Man Repeller (we love them)- it got us thinking about what were intimidated by. And why.The processI recommend a simple two-stepper. Get comfy, put on some Stevie Nicks (or whoever), and grab your pen. (Yes, I know, we have computers. Bear with me- I think this works better on real paper.) Actually, on that note- also chuck your phone and computer far far away from you. No distractions. Youre going to work through two questions. What am I intimidated by?Why am I intimidated by that?Soooo easy, right? Take a few minutes to sit there and write. Give yourself time- theyre not all going to come to you at once. If you really feel gung-ho about this, take a week to stay cognizant to your intimidations as you come across them, noting them when you do. I did, and I was surprised at how often I push away thoughts of aghhhhh throughout the week- some things Ive made habitually intimidating. What intimidates meI encourage you to try to go a bit deeper than the surface level intimidations that youll think of. Taking risks, failing, confident people are all intimidating- I get it. But what else? What specific things, people, experiences, intimidate you? Do you encounter something day in day out that gets you, every time?Do you usually avoid doing something, avoid seeing someone, or talking about a certain topic? Is it because y oure intimidated? When I tried to pick my coworkers brains about their intimidations, answers included, creative ruts, making a fool of myself, loud men in meetings, new coworkers (which we all were, at some point, meaning that Kit was intimidated by her subordinates), client silences, and good looking people (people with geometric faces). It doesnt have to be a big reveal- you probably subconsciously know what belongs on this list.Work through itI read somewhere recently- and now I cant find it, of course- that people arent really afraid of failure. Most of us arent petrified by the idea that we wont succeed at something. Were actually afraid that it will work. Were afraid of being great. Were afraid of reaching our potential. Because what then?Once youve figured out what youre intimidated by, its time to take it a step further, and ruminate on the why.Im intimidated by the idea of actually giving my all to something. Im scared to reach my full potential. But when I asked myself why, I realized that its because if I give my all, and I still am not where I want to be, Ill feel inadequate. I would rather be able to say, Yeah, I didnt succeed, but I didnt really try my hardest. It makes risks easier to take, and failure easier to swallow, if I can use the excuse that at least I didnt give it my all- so its not a dead end. I also realized, that on some level, I know exactly what I need to let go of in order to get to where I want to be. I need to let go of this fear of not being enough, even if I completely try my hardest. Ill work on it.Yeah, but whats the point?Whats the point of this, you mean? Other than being fun (woo), this is also a great exercise to help you identify your fears- which is the first step in challenging them.If you spend time just to make a list about what youre fearful of, what youre impressed by, great. Great start. If you take a few minutes more to question why those things intimidate you- even better. Maybe youll find common themes. Maybe youll learn that youre not actually afraid of what you thought you were. Maybe youll find that what you think youre afraid of, youre really one step away from conquering. And thats where self-growth starts. So dig deep this week. Reflect. What intimidates you? This article was originally published on CareerContessa.

How to Build a Successful Workplace Wellness Program
How to Build a Successful Workplace Wellness ProgramHow to Build a Successful Workplace Wellness ProgramEmployees spend an average of almost nine hours a day at work- more awake hours than any other place- so it seems logical that employers would want to develop a workplace that encourages and promotes healthy behaviors. Effective and successful workplace wohlbefinden programs can help improve an organizations culture and change lives. Companies can also benefit from lower turnover rates, fewer absences, increases in productivity and higher job satisfaction. Designing a Wellness Program Decades after the launch of the Wellness Council of America, one might think that the steps for getting a wellness program off the ground are easy- give employees a gym membership or stop bringing in sweet treats. Hold Weight Watchers meetings or teach yoga classes onsite for interested employees. Support employee athletic endeavors such as running in a 5k by paying their entry fees. However, its not that simple. Lack of employee engagement, a shortage of leadership support, and complicated incentives all have the potential to derail all have the potential to derail your wellness program before it starts. Here are a few tips on how to build a successful workplace wellness program and some things you will want to avoid as you build your successful workplace wellness program. Plan First Dont rush into a workplace wellness program. Instead, take your time to develop a formal strategic plan with measurable goals. Without a plan, you will always be reacting to the preskoranvers of the day instead of focusing on specific objectives. As part of this plan, be sure to get buy-in from management and include as many employees and departments as you can. Consider recruiting employees for a wellness committee to help you reach across the entire company. The more people involved, the easier it will be to spread the word about the program. Dont assume you need a large budget. Exercise creativity in identifying free activities to improve employee health. Things like walking meetings or healthy potlucks can help promote a healthy workplace without breaking the bank. Optics and Inclusiveness Show your employees they are valued. You want your wellness program to demonstrate that the company cares about employees health, not give the impression the company is coercing them to take a Health Risk Assessment. Keep it simple and straightforward- dont be negative or insult employees and dont build a wellness program with only the intent to decrease health care costs. Dont build a complicated wellness program. If employees dont understand wellness offerings or dont know how to participate, they will get frustrated and give up. Position the wellness program as something much bigger than just a human resources (HR) initiative. Think about how the program will strategically impact the business and how it plays a role in your culture. However, involve HR and be sure to appl y equitable principles to your program to ensure inclusiveness. For example, if your organization has a night shift, provide night shift workers the same access to wellness events and programming as the day shift. Stick with It Give your workplace wellness culture time to develop. Dont stop the wellness program because it hasnt saved millions of dollars, but make sure you have realistic expectations. Behavior change takes time, and most wellness programs do not see a positive return on investment for at least 18 months. One thing to remember is that you wont be able to tell if the program is working if you arent measuring it. Look into ways to collect data on your employees health status. Biometric screenings are a great way to collect objective data. Once the program is up and running dont put it on autopilot. Run regular reports and assess how your wellness program is improving employee health. Your program should evolve with your employees. Another way to plan for success is to avoid selecting programs that are not relevant to your workforce. A smoking cessation program, for example, will do little to impact costs if smoking and its related illnesses are not cost-drivers for your health insurance plan. Prioritize Privacy Dont forget to address employee privacy. Some employees may ask, What do they need that information for? Can they fire me because of my poor health? Stress repeatedly that personal health information is confidential. Benefits Wellness can have a profound effect on your company culture, turnover rates, recruitment efforts, and overall productivity. Follow these recommendations and your workplace wellness implementation will go so smoothly, that youll wonder why you waited so long to get started.

Constructing the Future with Flying Robots
Constructing the Future with Flying Robots Constructing the Future with Flying Robots Constructing the Future with Flying RobotsThere are drones for package delivery, drones for search and rescue, drones for sensing, and drones for photography, among others. Now another application for drones has taken another step closer to reality Drones for construction.Researchers at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) Zurich have demonstrated that the flying robots they customized and programmed can then build a rope bridge between scaffolding without human intervention, and the bridge can support the weight of a person walking across it. According to the researchers, flying machines offer a number of advantages over machines traditionally used to construct buildings and other objects because they can fly in and around existing objects and access places that may be difficult for non-aerial robots. Weve done research and a lot of different projects with flying machines for a long time, says Federico Augugliaro, lead robotic researcher on the project. Augugliaro, who recently welches awarded a Ph.D. in science from ETH Zurich, and earlier earned an M.S. in robotics, systems and control from the same university, has been working on flying machines as part of his academic work. Another earlier project included dancing quadrocopters that demonstrated coordinated flight for a swarm of flying machines. A quadrocopter weaving a rope bridge. reputation ETH ZurichThe projects are conducted in the ETH Zurich Flying Machine Arena (FMA), a state-of-the-art mobile testing space for aerial motion control research. The most recent construction, building the lightweight tensile structure with quadrocopters, built upon previous work and showed cooperative construction among the machines. According to the FMA website, quadrocopters are a machine of choice because of their agility, mechanical simplicity, robustness, and ability to hover. One area we decided to explore was flying machines interacting with their environment and to do so by building a structure that cannot be built in other ways by machines, Augugliaro says. We usually do some fundamental research to come up with methods and strategies that demonstrate whats possible and demonstrate some concepts. With the bridge it was to showcase that flying machines can build a structure that is load-bearing. Instead of something more abstract, we went for a bridge because it is really tangible. You need a flying machine to make it work because you have to go around the structure and within the structure, and a crane or other grounded machine cannot do that.An assembled rope bridge can support the crossing of a person. Image ETH ZurichThe rope bridge project was conducted in cooperation with the ETH Department of Architecture. Proof-of-concept of the main ideas came in 2011 when the teams four quadrocopters built a 20-foot tall tower of 1,500 foam modules in 18 hours during a four-day-long live exhibition at the FRAC Centre in Orlans, France. The project was conceived as a 1100 model of a 2,000-foot high vertical village. The exhibit at the FRAC Centre was one of the first structures built by flying robots. Industrial robots have been explored for building structures for at least a decade, but there is a limit to the size of the project they can work on. Since flying machines dont have the constraints of other robots being studied for building, research using full-scale structures is feasible. After that the FRAC Centre demonstration, we wanted to build a structure that was realistic and load-bearing, Augugliaro says. We had to solve different things and develop, for example, the rope-deploying mechanism and create some new algorithms. The team used existing flying machines, which they customized with various components such as electronics and the rope-deploying mechanism to connect the scaffolding anchor points. A motorized spool allowed t he robots to control the tension of the rope as it was deployed. The rope chosen was high performance polyethylene, used, for example, for yachts and winches.According to Augugliaro, one of the biggest challenges was working with the ropes. Its difficult to predict how the rope will behave so you have to build a very reliable and robust system. The team then began developing the algorithms using information such as measurements of the scaffolding, where knots should be tied, what kind of knots would be used, similar information about braiding, and directions for all activities that would be required so that the machines would know what to do. The machines did everything weaving in and out, braiding and tying knots to produce a bridge that consisted of nine rope segments with a total rope length of almost 400 feet spanning 24 feet between the endpoints. Nancy S. Giges is an independent writer. For Further Discussion One area we decided to explore was flying machines inter acting with their environment and to do so by building a structure that cannot be built in other ways by machines.Prof. Federico Augugliaro, Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich
